LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED HOSPITAL AWARD FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

(Brooklyn, NY; February 8, 2006) – Lutheran Medical Center (LMC) announced today that a study of quality at the nation’s 5,000 hospitals has named the facility among the top five percent in the United States and a recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical ExcellenceTM. LMC is one of only two hospitals in New York City (the only one in Brooklyn) and one of only seven hospitals in New York State to receive the award.

The study, conducted by HealthGrades, a leading health care ratings company, found that hospitals in the top five percent in the nation had mortality rates that were, on average, 27 percent lower than other hospitals, and major complication rates that were 14 percent lower.
“We are very pleased to be recognized nationally for quality and excellence. As a community hospital however, we are particularly proud to be the only medical center in Brooklyn and one of two in the entire metro area to achieve this status,” says Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and chief executive officer. “A great community hospital is made up of four main ingredients: great doctors, great nurses, a great emergency room and great operating rooms. That’s what makes Lutheran Medical Center the hospital of choice for Brooklyn residents.”

HealthGrades has recognized LMC for exceptional clinical outcomes in the following specialty areas: Pulmonary Care Excellence Award, Stroke Care Excellence Award, Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award, and General Surgery Excellence Award.

In addition, Lutheran Medical Center is ranked among the top ten hospitals in New York State for joint replacement surgery and the best rated in the region (Brooklyn/Staten Island) for overall orthopedics Each year, HealthGrades conducts the most comprehensive study of hospital quality in America. This year’s study analyzed almost 39 million Medicare hospitalization records that cover the latest three-year period, from 2002 to 2004. The analysis is risk-adjusted to account for differences in patient populations between hospitals.
HealthGrades found that Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence outperformed all other hospitals across the procedures and diagnoses studied. HealthGrades estimates that if during the time period studied all patients had gone to a Distinguished Hospital, 152,966 lives could have been saved and 21,896 post-operative complications could have been avoided.
