New Britain General Hospital Goes Electronic With EmpowERNew Britain General Hospital in New Britain, CT, is about to advance the technological state of its emergency department by installing a computerized electronic medical record program. This system, called EmpowER, was designed by Chicago-based IT vendor ECDS (Emergency Care Documentation Systems) to electronically capture all patient information and store it within that patient's chart. As the only acute-care, community-based general hospital in New Britain, a commitment to its patients has always been New Britain General Hospital's strong suit, and the adoption of this new technology is further proof.
Hospitals' adopting electronic charting systems is no longer a matter of if, but rather whenÑand New Britain General Hospital's emergency department is upgrading its technology to reflect this change. Using EmpowER, doctors and nurses can access patient information at any time rather than having to search for a paper chart. A patient's visit to the ED is electronically tracked, speeding up triage and registration and reducing the time patients spend in the waiting room. The system also provides risk management features in the form of automatic computer prompts, which remind doctors and nurses of drug allergies or potential drug-to-drug interactionsÑhelping to ensure that the maximum standard in patient safety is achieved. This is in sync with New Britain General Hospital's mission to provide quality, accessible and cost-effective healthcare to the central Connecticut community.
