ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES BELLE LATCHMAN AWARD (Phoenix, AZ; November 30, 2006) – The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix has selected St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center as a recipient of the Belle Latchman Community Service Award for its commitment to detect common genetic disorders in the Jewish population.
St. Joseph’s will be one of five organizations presented with the award on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the federation’s 65th annual meeting. St. Joseph’s helps sponsor the Greater Phoenix Jewish Genetic Disease Project, L’Dor V’Dor: From Generation to Generation, and is one of five organizations within the project that work together to raise awareness of Jewish genetic diseases in the Phoenix Jewish community. The group provides education programs and affordable screening opportunities annually to individuals who may be at risk for having children born with genetic disorders. Members of the project also include The Jewish Family and Children’s Service, Deutsch Family Shalom Center of Temple Chai, Young Leadership Department of Jewish Federation and the Hadassah Valley of the Sun Chapter.
The Belle Latchman Community Service Award recognizes local Jewish agencies, organizations, or congregations that have significantly enhanced the quality of life in the greater Phoenix area.
“St. Joseph’s is honored to work with the organizations who serve on the project,” says Dr. Kirk Aleck, geneticist at St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Center. “We feel it’s important to educate individuals about their risks for having children born with serious genetic disorders.”
